“Mi-a placut botanica foarte mult.

Aceasta faza a somnului apare undeva dupa mijlocul noptii- catre dimineata . Copilul cand are un cosmar, se trezeste brusc, plange, isi chea...

"Song of the Silk Road" by Mingmei Yip

Image
Despite her frank, pragmatic outward persona, would-be novelist Lily Lin is a romantic at heart. Tales of her childhood homeland have always captivated her, and she has always held a certain nostalgia for the famed  Silk Road. So when Lily receives an offer from a mysterious benefactor that will see her inheriting three million dollars in exchange for travelling the Silk Road–and undertaking a few admittedly odd tasks besides, she scarcely hesitates before booking her ticket. In China she finds herself a world away from her domineering married boyfriend and her minimum wage job: instead she finds herself caught up in the nuances of life in, for the most part, rural China. Her trip takes her to remote Buddhist temples, to Uyghur settlements, and through exquisite, challenging landscapes. And of course, Lily finds herself falling in love… Books in which the protagonist finds themselves on the receiving end of a life-changing sum of money abound. There’s Patricia Wood’s   Lott...

'The Fencer' ('Miekkailija')

Image
Finland’s official Oscar contender offers a fictionalized take on a real-life fencing teacher who took a stand against Stalinist oppression in Soviet-era Estonia. A local story with universal resonance, Finland’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Oscar race is a solid period drama set in the small Baltic state of Estonia during the dark days of Soviet occupation. Given that three out of director  Klaus Haro ’s previous four features were nominated as Finnish Oscar contenders,  The Fencer  is hardly a surprising choice. But much like its three predecessors, it will likely prove a little too staid and conventional to make the final shortlist.   Borrowing some familiar tropes from inspirational teacher-hero dramas like  Dead Poets Society ,  Anna Heinamaa ’s screenplay ticks all the right middlebrow boxes, but ultimately fails to deliver on character depth or moral complexity. Already released domestically to critical acclaim,  The Fencer...
